Browse Neoclassical houses for sale in Washington.
Neoclassical architecture is inspired by the culture, art, design, and architecture of ancient Greece and Rome. It has been around since the mid 18th century and was born as an opposition to the ornamentation, flamboyance, and decorative nature of Baroque and Rococo styles.
This style of architecture is all about perfect proportions, symmetry, shapes, forms, and balance. Common features include tall classical columns topped with a triangular pediment, full-height front porches, elaborate doors and entryways, flat roofs with a center dome, and evenly-spaced out windows with shutters.
One of the most well-known examples of neoclassical architecture is The White House in Washington DC which was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban. It is commonly seen in grand public and municipal buildings, large mansions, and the homes of presidents, politicians, and wealthy people.
