Sometimes known as “PoMo”, Postmodern architecture originated in the late 1960s and 1970s as a critique and response to Modernism and traditional styles of architecture. It aimed to create a contrast and sense of individualism from classic styles through adding ornamentation, symbols, wit, and fun to architecture. Postmodern style homes take on some elements from previous architectural styles but in more experimental, exaggerated, diverse, dynamic, and whimsical ways - and it is said that the general rule during this time was “anything goes”. The result? No two Postmodern homes or floor plans are symmetrical - these architects preferred asymmetry in order to create unique and unusual spaces. Some prominent Postmodern architects and designers include Robert Venturi, Ettore Sottsass, Frank Gehry, and Phillip Johson.
