It is one of the city’s oldest neighborhoods and was named after the St. Albans Sanitarium, which was located on San Vicente Boulevard between Washington and Western Avenues. The neighborhood has a population of about 1,000 people and an area of about 1 square mile (2.6 km²). It has many parks that are well maintained by the city’s department of parks and recreation.
The neighborhood is served by two public elementary schools, John Burroughs Elementary School (named after American naturalist John Burroughs), and Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School (named after former U.S President Theodore Roosevelt). The area also has one private school, St. Albans School for Boys, which was founded in 1901 by Mrs. Anna Head, who also founded Miss Head’s School for Girls in Pasadena, California in 1879. The school is located at 801 South Harvard Boulevard near Venice Boulevard.
