Derived from Mediterranean and Spanish revival style homes, Santa Barbara style architecture is often characterized by white stucco and plaster walls, arched doorways and windows, patterned red tile work, terracotta tile roofs, wrought and cast-iron details, oversized fireplaces, arcade-style arched passages, rustic exposed beam ceilings, asymmetrical towers, courtyards, patios, and an emphasis on an indoor-outdoor lifestyle. When an earthquake hit Santa Barbara in 1925, the city used its Spanish-colonial history to rebuild the city. Architects Mary McLaughlin Craig and James Osborne Craig were tasked with restoring many of Santa Barbara’s buildings throughout the 1920s and 30s - inspired by Santa Barbara’s Courthouse and the Old Mission building (which is why Santa Barbara style is often also called Mission architecture). George Washington Smith was a prominent Santa Barbara architect and is known for popularizing the Spanish Colonial Revival style in early 20th Century America.
