The Colonial Revival architectural style sought to revive elements of American colonial architecture and is one of the most well-known and widespread residential architectural styles in America. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Colonial Revival was extremely popular throughout the 1940s and still is today, despite the movement ending around World War II.
Original colonial architecture was introduced by British, Spanish, French, and Dutch settlers but by the late 1800s, bigger and fancier, ornate homes like Victorians and Greek Revivals were very popular so this influenced Colonial Revival designs.
So what do they look like? Well, they look a lot like their predecessors - just larger and more elaborate. Common features include a rectangular and symmetrical facade with side porches, brick or wood clapboard siding, between one to three stories, gabled or hip roof with narrow overhang, medium pitch, and wood shingles, multi-pane and bay windows with shutters, and a centered and prominent front doorway with columns, pilasters, or extended pediment to create a covered porch.
