Country Place is a neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. It is located at the southeastern corner of the city. The neighborhood’s boundaries are Thomas Road to the north, 27th Avenue to the west, Van Buren Street to the south, and Interstate 10 to the east. Country Place consists of many single-family homes and a few businesses along Thomas Road.
The neighborhood was developed in 1969 by William T. Heilman Jr., who also developed Sun City and Sun City West in neighboring Maricopa County. It was originally planned as a retirement community but changed its name from Country Village to Country Place when it became apparent that retirees were not interested in moving there due to its location outside of Phoenix city limits at that time.
The area was annexed into Phoenix on December 31, 1979, and has been called “the first planned community in metropolitan Phoenix” by author Dennis Evanosky. In 1982, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places as an example of 1960s architecture.
